Captain, Siyoli Lusaseni, and her South African team have arrived home from the World Student Squash Championships in Hungary with the bronze medal.
South Africa’s previous best finish at the Student Champs was 5th and Lusaseni admits that, prior to the tournament, their aim was to match that.
“To finish third is massive. We just seemed to get better with every game, and went on to finish top of our pool. When we won the quarterfinals, we knew we had a good chance to finish in the top three.
“Although we lost to England in the semis, we beat the United States in the playoffs to bag bronze.
“We’re really excited. It’s a fantastic achievement for South African squash. And I think World Squash now has a new found respect for team South Africa.”
Vice president of Squash SA, Alison Burchell, is thrilled with SA’s effort in Hungary.
“It’s great to see South Africa in the top three. The Student Games provide stiff competition and it’s a good indicator of who will go on to excel at the top level.
“We just need to ensure that we do everything we can to ensure that the step up is made from junior to senior level.”
