As female golfers from around the country prepare for the Inter-provincial golf tournament in Germiston later this month, the Southern Cape Ladies Golf Association (SCLGA) is celebrating the successful hosting of their championship in Plettenberg Bay last weekend.
SCLGA President, Karen Marshall, praised the greenkeepers for their excellent work, after torrential rain threatened to mar the event, sponsored by Pam Golding.
The fact that the Championship could take place at all was remarkable, bearing in mind the incredible rains and floods over the last month.
“More than 400mm of rain fell during the month of August, compared to the annual average of approx. 50mm. And three days before the tournament started, on Tuesday 29th, a further 54mm fell.
“Suffice to say that were it not for the dedication shown by the Manager of Plettenberg Bay Country Club, Marinus Weisz, and his staff, Spencer Cooper groundsman, and Roger Holmes, Chairman of the Grounds Committee, this Tournament would never have been possible.”
For many years it has been the tradition to have a Triangular Match between Southern Cape, Western Province and either E. Cape or Boland on the Friday before the official Championship.
This year, teams of six from Boland, Western Province and Southern Cape played in 18 hole Foursomes, and 18 holes match play.
The Southern Cape Team, consisting of Sandra Winter, Monique Smit, Fabienne Haremza, Ashleigh Holmes, Laura Kottwitz and Gaby de Reuck, were thrilled to beat Western Province for the first time ever.
Western Province, represented by Kelli Shean, Gilly Tebbutt, Jacqui Rathfelder, Wendy Warrington, Carol Charnock and Joanne Lefson, made Southern Cape work for their victory with a strong showing.
The Boland team came last in this year’s triangular, represented Players competing for Boland included Vicky Mostert, Nicole Loesch, Jenny Germs, Lynette Brink, Chloe Garner and Renée Liebenberg.
The final score was Southern Cape 25 points, Western Province 22 and Boland 7.
After a few last minute withdrawals, 74 women took to the course in the 36-hole Championship on Saturday.
They came from Boland, Eastern Province, Western Province, the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation, KwaZulu Natal, and Southern Cape. (3 girls from Gauteng later withdrew).
The winner in the Open A Division, and thus winner of the Betty Cooper Trophy was Kelli Shean (143 –73,70).

Sandra Winter won the E Stuart Findlay Trophy in the Closed A Division (referring to players from S. Cape only) with a score of 148 (74,74).
Sunday saw a tournament over 18 holes of Foursomes. It was bitterly cold, and with rain threatening, some 20 players thought better of it and withdrew.
But 56 stalwarts braved the weather and we really appreciated their effort. They came in chilled but cheerful.
The winners were Sandra Winter and Monique Smit in both the Open and Closed Divisions.
