The South African Women’s Hockey team put up a fight against India in the FIH Nations Cup in Valencia, Spain on Wednesday, 14 December 2022.
Knowing very well where they stand, the teams already knew their fate from the pool stage with India advancing to the top 4, while South Africa would progress to the 5-8 bracket.
The two teams last met at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in a thrilling 4-3 encounter that was shaded by India.
In the match, the South African side had a tough task on their hands as India dictated play and largely offered a bigger threat to them.
The Indians executed perfectly and took a 1-0 lead, which they held until the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second half, India were awarded a penalty stroke, however Anelle van Deventer produced an incredible save to keep the scoreline at just the one goal. That save lifted the South Africans who continued to show belief that they could get a result.
Despite the continuous effort from South Africa, India managed a second late penalty corner to add gloss to a frustrating night for them.
India completed the pool stage with 3 out of 3, while South Africa now looks ahead to the 5-8 playoffs where they will play Italy.
