Saskia Hockly set a new standard in her rapid ascent through the women paddling ranks, winning the renowned King of the Bay Surfski race, in dead flat conditions in Durban on Sunday, 25 June 2023.
Hockly is an exceptional paddler who emerged triumphant in this highly competitive race, showcasing her unwavering commitment and expertise in this water sport. Her remarkable journey from dedication to triumph serves as a testament to the power of discipline, training, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
“It was a constant dice between Mich and myself in dead flat conditions with minimal help. I guess I’ve always wanted to get one over Michelle and after a really disappointing nationals last week, it felt super good to come back and win the KZN Champs,” said Hockly.
“I just stuck into Michelle’s wave as long as I could and pushed through the hurt. Racing is 80% mental.” she added
The #GAL2022 recipient also spoke about the level of competitiveness at this prestigious event, saying that it wasn’t easy as she was competing with world-class athletes.
“The start line had 4 world-class athletes on it with 2 being world champions in surfski and 1 being an ex-Olympian. The entire race was a challenge in itself having to contest the flat conditions.”
Hockly will now shift her focus to the World Championships which start in 2 months’ time.
