South African hockey player Malikah Hamza is off to Germany, after signing for Harvestehuder Hockey club women’s first team for the next two seasons.

The Cape Town-born will be the first South African female and the youngest to play in the Bundesliga 1, when the league commences from August 2023.

Speaking to gsport, Hamza said: “I’m thrilled to share that I’ve received offers to play in the Bundesliga and the honour it presents is beyond words. Choosing between HTHC and Alster was a tough decision, given that Alster is the second-best team in Germany.

“But after considering several factors, and keeping in mind the rebuilding phase of HTHC and the quality young players coming in, I believed that HTHC was the best fit for me.

The 19-year-old will proudly fly the South African flag in Germany and pave the way for the next generation of hockey stars abroad.

“One of my proudest achievements is being currently the only South African female and probably the youngest SA female to play in the Bundesliga 1. This is a great honour and an amazing opportunity that not many people attain.

“I’m eagerly looking forward to playing alongside and also against top-notch international players in one of the best leagues in the world. I believe this experience will help me grow as a player, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to don the black and yellow for the next 2 seasons.”
