A true champion both on and off the court, Billie Jean King has dedicated her life to empowering women athletes and fighting for women’s equal rights in sport. Her tireless efforts have now led to a historic achievement as she becomes the first-ever female athlete to receive a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

According to tennis.com, the announcement came as the Hollywood Walk of Fame unveiled its star-studded class of 2024, and King’s inclusion rightfully solidifies her legendary status. In a video message, the Southern California native expressed her joy and gratitude, saying, “I’m so thrilled to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a native of Southern California, it is a dream come true. It is an honor to join all of the other legends in Hollywood.”

Joining the ranks of Hollywood’s elite, King’s star will be in esteemed company. The class of 2024 includes renowned actors like the late Chadwick Boseman, Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, and Michelle Yeoh, as well as celebrated musicians Gwen Stefani, Andre ‘Dr. Dre’ Young, and Def Leppard.

King’s achievement also marks a significant step forward for athletes in the world of entertainment. She joins former football player and actor Carl Weathers in the new Sports Entertainment category, which was introduced in 2023. This category recognizes the contributions of athletes-turned-performers and adds their names to the world’s most famous sidewalk. The inaugural honoree of the Sports Entertainment category was former football player turned broadcaster Michael Strahan.

While the details of King’s star ceremony are yet to be announced, recipients have up to two years from their selection date to schedule the ceremony. It’s a momentous occasion that honours King’s outstanding contributions to sport, activism, and the advancement of women’s rights.

Billie Jean King’s journey continues to inspire generations of athletes, and her Hollywood Walk of Fame star serves as a testament to her remarkable legacy. Her name will forever be etched among the stars, symbolizing the indelible impact she has made on and off the tennis court.
