Saweety Boora engraved her name into Indian boxing history, after winning the 81kg category gold at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, on Saturday, 25 March 2023.
Boora secured the gold medal in the 75-81kg finals via a split-verdict, registering a 4-3 win over two-time medallist, Wang Lina.

Nine years ago, the now 30-year-old had to settle for a silver medal, following a great run of matches that saw her defeat some big names to reach the finals of the World Championships.
With this victory, Boora is the seventh Indian boxer to be crowned world champion.
Earlier, another local favourite Nitu Ghanghas, secured a unanimous decision win against Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg to clinch a gold in the 45-48 kg category finals.

Following her victory this is what the 22-year-old had to say: “I feel very proud. It is the result of the hard work that I have put in since starting boxing in 2012. Today I am very proud of myself, my coaches and my family. My parents were here. “This money ( ₹80 lakh prize money) will help me pay the loans my father (Jai Bhagwan) took for my boxing career.”
