Second-Half Sub Heralds Big Win

Banyana Banyana secured an historic victory over Zimbabwe on Saturday afternoon, after two goals by Noko Matlou and one each by Nompumelelo Nyandeni and Mamello Makhabane ensured the best possible advantage ahead of the African Women’s Championship qualifier return leg, scheduled for Pretoria next week.

Zimbabwe showed their determination by keeping a one-nil lead until half-time, but an inspired substitution by coach Augustine Makalakalane at the break bringing on midfielder Merry Ntsweng for defender Keneilwe Mathibela resulted in two goals early in the second half, and two more to further drive home the advantage.

Banyana face the return leg match against Zimbabwe, and should they fail to overturn the hefty advantage enjoyed by the South African national women’s team, South Africa are assured of continuing their quest of  overturning Nigeria’s dominance of the continental cup.
