Caster Semenya was the belle of the ball at the prestigious SPAR Athletics Gauteng North Awards, an annual event that is undoubtedly a highlight on the calendars of our country’s top athletes, at Pretoria’s Manhattan Hotel on Saturday, 16 February 2013.
Semenya scooped the Female Athlete of the Year award after also winning the Track & Field Female Athlete of the Year award, headlining women winners including Mariaan Serdyn, Elsa Meyer, Kyla van Graan, Anyslee van Graan, Olivia Labuschagne and Charne Bosman.
“It is such an honour and a privilege to celebrate the accolades of our athletes – they’ve worked hard and they are very deserving,” says Walter Vilakazi, AGN’s General Manager.
“AGN is proud to be associated with the calibre of athletes that this country has to offer, and it has been a pleasure to see them excel at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and of course on local soil.”
Women were winners in eight of the total of 17 different awards handed out at the ceremony, celebrating athletes in their respective fields such as cross country, race walking, road running and track and field.
Comments from the athletes, sponsors and governing bodies involved echoed that the entire evening was a roaring success, and that AGN can especially be proud of what they, together with our country’s finest athletes, have achieved in the last year.
