Kaylea Sher exited the Nike Junior Tour International Masters in Torino, Italy, after her two-set 6-3 7-5 loss to American Ellen Tsay in the quarter-finals, after more of the erratic play that saw her narrowly progress in the second round against Sarah-Maria Richter.
But Sher didn’t make it easy for the more consistent Tsay as the clouds rolled in and the rain came down on Wednesday morning, when she brought all her energy to bear as Tsay was serving 5-2 for the match, after winning the opening set 6-3.
Sher broke serve, held, and then broke again to level the set at 5-5, but instead of closing in for the kill, Sher played a dreadful game to lose her own serve to love.
She held a break point when Tsay served for the match for the third time but hit the return long and made an error on match point.
"I had my opportunities but I didn’t take them," said Sher. "That is still something I need to learn if I want to get ahead. That is still something I need to learn if I want to get ahead. I felt she was tiring and that if we had gone to a third set, I would have won the match."
Sher may take inspiration from U12 competitor Kay-Leigh Nicholas, who was lost her first match to participate in the consolation draw, and who played a great two set 6-0 6-1 winner over Austria’s Jacqueline Zagler.
