#ShowYourColours as Varsity Netball takes Centre Stage in 2018!

UP-Tuks will look to keep their title, as the next crop of South African Netball stars are unearthed.

Eight university teams from across South Africa from Cape Town to Potchefstroom will take part in this colourful celebration of diversity, camaraderie and the best netball action South Africa has to offer, when Varsity Netball begins on August 26th.

Last year’s champions UP-Tuks will be out to defend their title as they compete against NWU (North-West University), Maties (University of Stellenbosch), Kovsies (University of Free State), Madibaz (Nelson Mandela University), UJ (University of Johannesburg), UWC (University of the Western Cape) and VUT (Vaal University of Technology) with the rest of the competition keen to knock the Pretoria side off their throne.

#ShowYourColours perfectly represents the extraordinary festival of camaraderie and university pride that Varsity Netball’s identity has become. The student athletes hail from all areas of our beautiful country; from different cultures, religions and communities, but nothing matters more to the players than representing their universities and expressing their phenomenal talent when Varsity Netball begins. More importantly, #ShowYourColours calls upon the fans to display their vibrant support for their players taking to the court.

Varsity Netball code manager Jana Arlow thanked the sponsors for their continued support as she looks forward to another exciting tournament.

“The sixth edition of Varsity Netball is back and we’re looking forward to seeing South Africa’s top talent in action. None of this would be possible without the generous support from our sponsors First National Bank (FNB), Samsung and Wimpy.”

Arlow expressed her delight with the massive success the tournament has had in producing a host of South African National netball stars.

“Varsity Netball players have gone on to become regular faces in the Proteas squad. After a recent squad announcement, only three players of the current Proteas team did not come through Varsity Netball. Karla Pretorius (née Mostert), Khanyisa Chawane, Romé Dreyer, Maryka Holtzhausen, Danelle Lochner, Lenize Potgieter, Shadine van der Merwe, Ine-Marí Venter, Zanele Vimbela, Sigi Burger, Meagan Roux and Monique Reyneke all represented their respective universities on the Varsity Netball stage.

“These ladies and so many others have inspired the young players rising through the school ranks. They play with such passion and are true ambassadors for the game. I am sure that these athletes will make their universities proud during the 2018 Varsity Netball tournament.”

Varsity Netball will begin on 26 August with double-header weekends in Kovsies and Madibaz, with legs of the competition taking place at Maties and UP-Tuks as well. Selected games will be televised throughout the tournament on SuperSport 210.
