Simmonds Leads Top Seeds to Futures Round 2

South African top seed Chanel Simmonds was in commanding form in her opener against Amelie Intert of Germany at the Sun City Futures 2 the women’s singles on Tuesday, moving through to round two without dropping a set.

Simmonds beat Intert 6-2 6-1, and said after her win that she was pleased with the way she played. “I was the more consistent player today, and am happy with my form, and feel good about my chances this week,” said Simmonds.

Last week’s women’s winner, the fifth seed Michelle Sammons (SA) was shocked in her first round, losing to local junior Zani Barnard 6-4 4-6 6-7 (7-1).

It was a good day for the Barnard family when Zani’s twin sister Lee beat National Junior Champion Katie Poluta of Cape Town, 5-7 6-3 6-2.

The other South African women player winning through to round two on Tuesday was fourth seed Natasha Fourouclas.

The second round of the Sun City Futures 2 will be played on Wednesday from 10h00.
