Simmonds Revels in Digicall Futures 1 Win in Stellenbosch

Top seed Chanel Simmonds won the women’s singles title of the Digicall Futures 1 international tennis tournament played at the University of Stellenbosch in a positive day for tennis in South Africa.

“My goal for the week was to reach the semi-finals. So to win the tournament is very nice and it will surely help the world ranking points.”

Simmonds beat her double partner Kaitlyn Christian (US of America) 4-6, 6-3 and 7-5. It was a windy day and players could sometimes only guess where the ball will land, but the final still yielded spectacular tennis.

They were on court for 2 hours and 40 minutes of spectacular tennis as the spectators enjoyed both players chasing each other around, using every corner on the court.

Both players came into final having battled in excess of three hours to overcome their semi-final opponents, Simmonds beating third-seed Margarita Lazareva 6-1, 6-7 and 6-1.

Simmonds had looked on her way to win easy in two sets, when the Russian found some of the form that got her into the penultimate round of the tournament, but the plucky South African recovered very fast from losing the tiebreak to make sure of her place in the final.

American wild card Kaitlyn Christian also spent more than three hours on court to book her place in Sunday’s final, after winning her match against Ilze Hattingh 6-4, 4-6 and 7-5, who won the second set after being 0-3 down earlier in the match.
