South Africa Junior Women Dominate the 15th Africa Aquatics Junior Swimming Champs

South Africa’s representatives were in top form at the 15th Africa Aquatics Junior Swimming Championship in Mauritius, finishing first in the overall rankings after an accumulation of podium finishes that saw them amass 350 points at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex in Saint Pierre, Mauritius, from 6-10 December, 2023. 

Number two was Egypt with 335 points, while the hosts Mauritius (126) wrapped up the top three nations.  

Among South Africa’s stand out performers were the young ladies that won the 400m Freestyle Relay- Georgia Els, Lise Coetzee, Zoe Griffiths and Marony Jacobs, finishing in a time of 8:38:52, followed by Egypt (8:49:29) and Mauritania finished 3rd in 9:21:51.

The championships brought together some of the continents’ top junior swimmers, and in the Women’s 50m breaststroke, Team South Africa secured a top-2 finish, led by Georgia Els (32:42), her compatriot Gabriella van der Berg (33:64) came second. Egyptian Nadin Mohamed Amin concludes the Top 3 after touching the wall in 33:68 seconds.

17 year old Els who had the tournament of her dreams once again was the star in the 400m Individual Medley, winning in 5:04:05, Egyptians Jasmine Ahmed Eissa (5:10:77) and Nadin Mohamed Amin (5:11:21) were no match for the South African.

South Africa’s domination continued in the Backstroke event Emma de Wet (1:03:67) and Cassidy Burgees (1:04:42) completing a 1-2 finish at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex, Saint Pierre.

South Africa’s greatest competition Egypt secured top spot in the 1500m Freestyle but Team SA’s Marony Jacobs (17:38:98) and Zoe Griffiths (17:49:02) took 2nd and 3rd respectively.
