South African Women in Sport Celebrate #WorldCupWednesday

Leading South African women’s sport news provider, gsport, has launched the #WorldCupWednesday campaign to drum up support ahead of a big year for women’s sport on local shores in 2023.

South Africa is gearing up to host at least five major global events that is set to boost the rise of women’s sport in the country and on the continent of Africa.

January 2023 sees the hosting of the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World cup while the senior stars battle it out for top honours in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup a month later. Also in February is the World Indoor Hockey World Cup in Pretoria. The World Table Tennis Championships take place in May while the Netball World Cup will take centre stage in August.

Speaking at the gsport Annual List of Newsmakers (#GAL2022) event where the #WorldCupWednesday initiative was launched, gsport Founder, Kass Naidoo, said: “2023… The Year of Women’s Sport! We are claiming it. We believe it’s going to be the year that is going to prove to South Africans that women in sport deserve to be treated as professionals – that they are going to be paid to play sport.

“Every seat filled is a victory for women’s sport so gsport has launched #WorldCupWednesday. Every Wednesday, we will amplify all efforts being made to raise the profile of women’s sport ahead of World Cup year.”

The #GAL2022, South Africa’s only women’s sport newsmakers event, had a distinct World Cup feel to it, with official Netball World Cup mascot, Letsatsi, in attendance, to encourage guests to buy tickets.

Tickets are free for the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup while ticket sales have opened for the senior ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February, which is expected to be under star-studded affair.

gsport also used #GAL2022 as the occasion to launch its special edition campaign T-shirt: 2023 – The Year of Women’s Sport which is available for sale at R300. Orders can be placed at [email protected]. The 2023 cap is available at R120.
