Momentum Proteas star all-rounder Suné Luus and wicket-keeper Sinalo Jafta are looking forward to seeing South Africa host the world when the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup takes place from 10-26 February 2023.
Luus, who led the Momentum Proteas team for over a year due to the absence of injured team captain Dané van Niekerk, says hosting the tournament will positively impact women’s cricket in the country.
“It’s huge! This is the step we need in the right direction for women’s cricket. I think with the World Cup being at home, a lot of the young girls can come out to the stadiums, watch the games and that can probably put in their minds that playing sport is possible,” Luus explained to gsport.
“Hopefully that will be the mindset that goes around next year, and we just get more girls wanting to be a part of sport in general.”
When asked about the price of the tickets going for R60, Luus says: “It’s awesome because the tickets are very accessible for everyone to come. That’s the way that we can fill the stadiums and we hope that everyone will come out and support the Proteas and just the game of cricket.”
Jafta shared similar sentiments as she says her family have no excuse not to come to the matches as a handful of games will take place in the Western Cape.
“My family have no excuses because we live in Cape Town. They can’t say the games are too far for them to come and watch!”
Speaking on the importance of South Africa hosting, Jafta says: “For us as a team to know that we are hosting it here at home, it gives us goosebumps and not only do we owe it to ourselves but for the younger generation coming up.”
The team has come off an action-packed year so far, which includes playing in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, a tour to Ireland, challenging campaigns against England and the Commonwealth Games.
“I think the games that we played will be crucial to see where we end up in the World Cup. Also, we need to find consistency in our performances,” concluded Jafta.
