Granville West of Port Elizabeth was named captain of the 2006 SA Surfing Team at the Colours Awards evening in Cape Town Monday night.

West, a popular choice among his teammates, represented the South African Under-23 team in the Aloha Cup in Cape Town in January, and will lead the team at the ISA World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach, California.
The event begins on Saturday October 14, and ends on October 22.

Representing the girls are Rosanne Hodge (East London) and Tammy Lee Smith (Salt Rock), and they are joined by team members Jordy Smith, Matthew Kruger (both Durban), Gavin Roberts (Scottburgh), Matthew Moir (Kirstenhof), Josh Salie (Kommetjie), Kwezi Qika (Ocean View), Sacha Specker (Camps Bay), Wes Fischer (Durban) and Lyndall Pells (Plettenberg Bay).

The Manager is Surfing South Africa President Cecil Solomon (Gordon’s Bay), Bruce Jackson (Durban North) is head coach, Wade Sharp, a 1996 SA Team surfer who now lives in Huntington Beach, is Assistant coach and Rory Beach (Durban North) is the technical coach.

The team’s camps and travel expenses have been funded by a grant from the National Lottery Board (Lotto) and the side has received support from O’Neill South Africa, Island Style and Reef Wetsuits.

The girls left from Cape Town at midday Tuesday, and will arrive in Huntington Beach this evening.
