Swimmers Medal Haul Increases

More medals in the kitty was the story on Tuesday in Algiers, as Team SA added another four gold medals for a total of 12 bagged, with the women in the combined team bringing in 3 Gold, two Silver and two Bronze for a share of 7 in the total.

Our girls in the pool were the main medal-baggers, with Suzaan van Biljon taking first place for Gold in the 50m breast-stroke, impaired swimmer Natalie du Toit didn’t let her disability prevent her from taking top honours in the 1500m freestyle.
Amanda Loots continued her stunning form for Gold in the 200m butterfly, in which Kathryn Meaklim placed second for Silver.
Melissa Corfe finished second in the 200m backstroke for a Silver medal to the tally, and she was closely followed by Jessica Pengelly, who brought the Bronze medal to Team South Africa’s war chest.
In Wrestling, Milanda Marais (in the 63kg category) finished third for Bronze, while Jeanie Coetzer (55kg category) finished in 7th position overall.
The Badminton Ladies Singles saw all of Michelle Edwards, Stacy Doubell and Kerry-Lee Harington progress to the second round, as did Michelle Edwards, Chantal Bott, Stacy Doubell and Kerry–Lee Harington in the Ladies Doubles.
The South Africa Chess Women’s struggled against a dominant team from Algeria to loose 3 – 1, while in Fencing Elvira Wood, Natashs Tishler, Racheal Barlow and Adele du Plooy finished in fourth position in the Womens Foil event.
Wendy Wonnenburg lost out in the first round against Senegal in Karate’s Female Kumite (+ 60kg division), while Lourencia Kok remains in the top eight in the Open division against Algeria.
The Mixed Doubles Table Tennis team of Cogill and Samiwitz won 3 – 2 against Mauritius, while Jone/Maphanga lost 2 – 3 to Ghana.
