For the fourth time in 13 months, United States of America’s Sydney McLaughlin sets a new world record in the 400m hurdles race at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon on Friday, 22 July 2022.
McLaughlin ran the 400m hurdles at the championships in a time of 50.68, breaking her previous record by 0.73 seconds.
“It’s unreal,” McLaughlin said in the post race interview on the track.
She beat second-place finisher Femke Bol of the Netherlands by 1.59, with Dalilah Muhammad finishing third in 53.13 to round up the podium.
The 22-year-old became the second youngest track and field athlete in history to own three of the biggest accolades in an individual event, which includes Olympic gold, world title and world wecord.
When McLaughlin finished, she bent to the ground, looked at the scoreboard and said, “That’s great, that’s great.”
