Team GB Leads Acer 5 Nations

Team Great Britain are top of the leader board with seven matches in hand and one point, after the first round of the Acer 5 Nations Commonwealth Tournament being played at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf.

A sterling performance came from Team Great Britain winning all of their matches against Canada today, to go one and a half points clear of Team Australia.

Great Britain’s Melissa Reid assisted Great Britain’s lead, with partner Breanne Loucks carding a further a five birdies during her afternoon singles match, which she won 6/4 against Canada’s MaryAnn LaPointe.

“We arrived early, which gave the team enough time to practice, without overdoing it each day”, says Sue Turner, Captain Team Great Britain.

“The entire team played exceptionally well today, and most of all played as one unit – we are really looking forward to the rest of the week.”

Defending champions Australia played decisively in their first matches against host country South Africa, winning both foursomes and three of their singles matches.

Used to similar courses back home, Team Australia looked confident today, with one of their singles matches going to the wire when Emma Bennett played South Africa’s Ashleigh Simon.

Simon carded a birdie on the final hole, whilst Bennett’s nerves came into play and double dropped, halving the match for Australia posting five and half points on the leader board.

The South Africans weren’t playing at their best today. Captain Sandra Winter says: “We were quite nervous out there today, missing quite a few putts, not our best performance, but I’m confident we will bounce back.”

South Africa gets a bye tomorrow and are back in action on Wednesday against Canada. Great Britain face their nearest rivals Australia, whilst New Zealand make their first appearance at the Tournament against Canada.
