Township Dash Promises Hard Cash

The winner of the women’s Nedbank Matha Series 21.1km road race event in Kanyamazane township near Nelspruit on Saturday, 5 April, will win R20,000, in the main event half-marathon, which starts at 7am.

Athletes will have three hours to complete the route through Kanyamazane township, in Nelspruit, and for the less ambitious, there is a 5km fun run that gets underway at 7.30am, in the exciting event in which a total of R202,000 in prize money is up for grabs.

"Although this is the first time the Nedbank Matha Series will be contested in our province, we are confident of making it a resounding success," Athletics Mpumalanga President Ben Makula disclosed. "We have distributed entry forms for the event in Middleburg, Secunda, Witbank, and the provincial capital Nelspruit."

Lesotho’s Mamorallo Tjoka was the 21.1km Tshwane champion on 19 January, while South Africa’s Charne Bosman, also running in Mr Price colours, was the first local lady home. Other contenders for the race include 2007 Spar Grand Prix winner Rene Kalmer, who placed fourth in January, and Zimbabwe’s Tabitha Tsatsa, who took the bronze medal at the High Performance Centre.

"Currently, we are working with the Mpumalanga Director of Sports to secure transports for athletes from Middleburg, Secunda, Witbank, and Nelspruit to Kanyamazane for the event. The public will receive updates on preparations for the events on Radio Ikwekwezi," Makula revealed.

Athletes competing in the Half Marathon must be above 16 years of age. Those under 19 will be categorised as junior athletes, while runners entering the 5km fun run must be above the age of nine years, and if you think you’re going to win some cash, remember to bring your ID book on the day!

Aspiring competitors are welcomed to download their entry forms online by visiting the Nedbank Sponsorships website. Others may choose to hand in complete registration form at Athletics South Africa offices, at No. 3, 11th Avenue, while Entry forms can also be collected from sports shops and gyms in Nelspruit.
