The University of Cape Town held its annual Sports Awards Dinner at the magnificent Cape Sun Hotel and gsport Editor Kass Naidoo had the honour of being guest speaker at the prestigious event.
One of the big winners on the night was netball player Sphelele Sikhakhane, winner of the Best First Year trophy.
The towering beauty is a member of the Western Province under-19 A Team and was selected for the SA under-19 squad.
Megan Greenwood accepted the Transformation Trophy on behalf of the Mountain and Ski Club. The Club won for starting an outreach programme last year with the aim to provide underprivileged teenagers with the skills and opportunities. The aim was to provide the participants with the basic knowledge and understanding of nature.
UCT has had another memorable student sports year, and the Director of Sport and Recreation is hoping that 2008 will be even better.
Twelve students and three staff represented UCT at the World Student Games in Bangkok, Thailand in August, and seven students represented South Africa at senior level in a variety of sports, highlighting the broad spectrum of activity available at the University.
"The Sports Council’s policy of sport for all has had a meaningful impact on intra-mural sport of the past 12 months," said John Donald, "With existing programmes expanding to accommodate the ever-increasing interest, and the addition of cricket and basketball to the eight clubs now offering properly structured sustainable programmes."
