University of Johannesburg dethroned UWC in a penalty shootout to win the 2022 Varsity Football title on Sunday, 16 October 2022.
Both teams had opportunities to score goals, but with a strong defence they lacked finishing off. At half-time neither side had put the ball at the back of the net, as the score remained 0-0.
When the final whistle blew and the score still locked at 0-0, UJ managed to put 5 goals in the back of the net in the penalty shootout, beating UWC 5-3.
UJ’s Spumelele Shamase was voted Player of the Tournament by the team managers, her seven goals throughout the tournament was instrumental in helping UJ being crowned the 2022 champions.
