In last week’s gsport Twitter Space Thursday, host Oarabile Diphoko was joined by former gsport intern, Valencia Seshoene who discussed what her career has been like in the last few years and what she is still hoping to achieve.

During the engaging conversation, Seshoene reflected on how she got involved with gsport mentioning that she saw a Tweet by gsport Founder, Kass Naidoo and she decided to take a chance and texted Kass.

“I got a message from Kass, inviting me to five of the best fans event where we all got to watch the cricket. Furthermore, we had more conversations because at the time I was not sure what I wanted to do.”

Using all the knowledge and experience she learnt from gsport, the BA Sport Communications graduate joined UJ sport, as Media Officer.

“UJ sport opened a lot of opportunities for me through the different positions I held. These positions played a huge role in opening the doors in my career,” she added.

Looking back on her journey so far, Seshoene says: “Not everything you learn in the classroom is applied in the workplace. You can come out as a star student but when you get into this industry, you need to accept that there will be things you will have to relearn.

“I am a person that loves feedback, because I know I need to be open to learning. I want people to tell me how I can improve. Those are the people that want to see you flourish and give the best advice.”

With the year coming to an end, Seshoene added how 2022 has been full of surprises, stating: “I was accepted as a volunteer for the All Africa Games that took place in Kenya,” adding that was the first time she was ever on a flight.

As her star continues to rise, she reveals her ambitions, saying: “For now, I would say I want to serve university sport as much as I can. I want to make my presence in the media industry felt. I would like to still see the USSA athletes make their mark in the world, before looking to work at federations abroad.

“However, I think I still have a lot to offer some of the organizations right here at home before looking outside this country.”

Having being in the industry for a couple of years, Seshoene also shared advice to the youth who would like to get into the sport industry.

“Do a lot of voluntary work. It plays a plays a huge role as it gives you something to offer even though you have not started working in the industry. You can help out in your own university, you can help out in the sport department.

“Networking is also really important. Sometimes you meet people but they already know you because of social media. Networking really helps when building your resume.”

Diphoko was also joined by 2022 Momentum gsport Awards Mail & Guardian Woman in Print winner, Mpumi Manyisi.
