Operated on in April, Du Plessis landed five throws between 55.02m and 56.22m, consistency in adversity that promises far more as her rebuild towards Los Angeles continues.
On the mat, Skye Knoester fought four bouts and came within one victory of the podium on her Games debut in the women’s 63kg, opening with an ippon over Ghana’s Elizabeth Oduro, falling by a single yuko to eventual champion Laurence Biron of Canada, and throwing Australia’s Maeve Coughlan by ippon in a seven-minute repechage before India’s Unnati Sharma proved one fight too many in the bronze medal match, a day after Donné Breytenbach’s bronze in the 57kg.
Karabo More closed her Games with 12th in the women’s mile final in 4:50.96, days after her 4:37.97 season’s best in the heats, Bridgit Herselman signed off the singles by beating India’s Nayanmoni Saikia 4-7, 18-3, 1-0 on the tie-break, and Sheryl James placed eighth in the T38 200m final. On the boards on Sunday, S’annara Grove ended South Africa’s women’s campaign with 22nd in the elimination race, following her 16th in the points race.
The curtain fell at The Hydro on Sunday night, Masala Makatu carrying the South African flag as Prince Edward declared the Games closed and Simple Minds sent the athletes home under white confetti.

Team South Africa finish with 28 medals, seven gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze, 11th on the table and one better than Birmingham, with South Africa’s women delivering eleven of them outright, Lara van Niekerk’s defended 50m breaststroke gold at their head, alongside five silvers, five bronzes and a shared mixed relay silver.
Twenty-two of the 28 came from the pool, and the netballers’ fifth place completed the best of the rest.
