Erin Gallagher clung on by a single hundredth of a second to claim bronze in the women’s 100m butterfly, her third medal of these Games, at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday, 27 July 2026.
Swimming from lane two, Gallagher turned second in 26.51 behind Australia’s Alex Perkins, was passed by home favourite Keanna Macinnes down the final length, and held off the fast-finishing Brittany Castelluzzo by 57.39 to 57.40.
“Honestly, I knew this race was going to be a dogfight. I’m so, so elated to have touched the wall and seeing that third place.”

Gallagher, whose bronze joins her 50m butterfly silver and relay bronze in her farewell Games. “Last Commies I didn’t even make the final for the 100 ‘fly, so just making the final was an improvement, but to come away with a medal speaks for itself.”
There was agony on the weightlifting platform, where 41-year-old Johanni Taljaard finished fourth in the women’s 53kg on 175kg, from a 78kg snatch and 97kg clean and jerk, 3kg short of bronze after her final 101kg lift was ruled out for a bent elbow with her team’s challenge card already spent.
“It’s sad to be so close and feel the medal slipping away out of your hands but it is what it is.”

Taljaard, who came out of retirement last year and now has Los Angeles in her sights. “Now, I definitely want to give Olympic qualification one more go, and see what happens. As an athlete, you will always be hungry for more.” Anneke Spies-Burger finished seventh in the 58kg on 178kg.
The track programme opened with Prudence Sekgodiso surviving a scare in the 800m heats, broken in her stride when a rival tripped behind her before finishing fourth in 2:03.84 and progressing to Wednesday’s semi-finals as a fastest non-automatic qualifier.

Sheryl James reached the T38 100m final and placed eighth in 14.08, with Liezel Gouws missing out in the heats, while Thandolwethu Mathiba’s boxing campaign ended in a points defeat to England’s Ruby White.
In the pool’s other action, Caitlin de Lange placed eighth in the 100m freestyle final in 55.52 as Australia swept the medals, and the 4x200m freestyle relay quartet finished sixth in 8:09.16.
Tuesday night’s finals took shape behind them: Olivia Nel qualified second in her semi-final for the 50m backstroke final, with Jessica Thompson missing out, and defending champion Lara van Niekerk won her heat in 30.23, and her semi-final in 30.63, to enter the 50m breaststroke final as second seed, joined by Rebecca Meder, with Kaylene Corbett ninth and out.
The netballers return from their rest day to meet Northern Ireland in Pool A in mid-afternoon on Tuesday, chasing a third straight win under coach Jenny van Dyk. The morning pool session brings the 200m individual medley heats for Aimee Canny and Meder, the 50m freestyle heats for Nel, De Lange and Thompson, Duné Coetzee’s opening 800m freestyle swim, and the S13 50m freestyle heats for Alani Ferreira and Danika Vyncke.

The evening is another medal feast. Canny and Meder chase the 200m individual medley final, Ferreira and Vyncke target the S13 50m freestyle final, and Nel contests the 50m backstroke final before Van Niekerk, the Games record holder at 29.73, defends her 50m breaststroke crown with Meder alongside her. The 50m freestyle semi-finals and the mixed 4x100m medley relay final close the night, all subject to progression.
