JVW Stars (Players selected from the JVW Girls School league) participated in the Jomo Cosmos/Elspark Tournament held at Elspark on Sunday 14 October 2012. The squad which is made up of players from schools in the Ekurhuleni District was selected and trained by Banyana Banyana Defender and Vice-Captain, Janine van Wyk.

The tournament consisted of Five Women’s sides. The JVW Stars squad was split into two different teams on the day, with the Gold side reaching the Finals, which was played against SASOL league team, Springs Home Sweepers.

The girls competed at a high level, with both teams having several chances on goal. The match ended in a 0-0 draw and went straight to penalties.

Cailin Whyte (JVW GK) saved the first penalty taken by the Springs Home Sweepers Player, with their second penalty going wide of the goals. Both Talia Swaartbooi and Nelisiwe Mchunu placed their shots in the back of the net. The JVW stars team won 2-0.

Unfortunately the team played without their head coach, Janine Van Wyk as she is busy with her National Duties.

“I am so proud of my team,” said Van Wyk. “There are so many talented players who have the ability to succeed in the sport, and I am happy to be able to give them that opportunity.”
