Vote for Girls in SA

In many of the award categories, which mostly include
nominees from all genders, women outnumber the men’s entrants! The awards
evening, sponsored for the fourth consecutive year by loyal corporate Telkom,
is further supported by Sport & Recreation SA, the National Lotteries
Distribution Trust Fund, BestMed and Arena.

Van Biljon made swimming headlines in winning gold in the
200 metres breaststroke at the FINA World Short Course Championships in Manchester, England
in April this year, and claimed bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke at the
same event.

At the Telkom SA National Championships held in Durban earlier this year,
Van Biljon qualified to represent SA at the Olympics in both the 100 and 200
metres breaststroke events.

At the All-Africa Games held in Algeria in September last year,
Durban-based Corfe collected gold in the 100, 200 and 400 metres freestyle, as
well as silver in the 100 and 200 metres backstroke. Corfe also collected gold
for her country as part of the relay teams in the 4 x 100 metres freestyle, 4 x
200 metres freestyle and 4 x 100 metres medley events.

Corfe was in fine form at the Telkom SA National
Championships in Durban in April, where she
booked her place in the Olympic team for Beijing,
with qualifying performances in the 100 and 200 metres backstroke, 200 and 400
metres freestyle, and as a member of the 4 x 100 metres medley relay team.

She clocked African short course record times in the 400
metres freestyle, and as part of the 4 x 100 metres freestyle and 4 x 100
metres medley relay teams, and in the long course competition, Corfe set
continental records in the 200 and 400 metres freestyle and as part of the 4 x
100 metres medley races.

Swimming SA’s Awards committee will meet to decide on the
winners from all categories, taking performances and efforts for the period 1
May 2007 to 30 April 2008 into account.

Swim sensation Natalie du Toit, Swimming SA’s Learn to Swim
manager Easlyn Young and Lize Mari Retief are the nominees in the ‘Personality
of the Year’ category, which will be decided by public vote on Swimming SA’s
website. The voting will close on Thursday, 25 September 16h00.

Other awards up for grabs, to be decided by the selection
committee, include Development Club of the Year, Learn to Swim Instructor of
the Year, Administer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Coach of the Year
(junior athletes), Coach of the Year, Most Promising Athlete of the Year, Water
Polo Player of the Year, Diver of the Year, Synchronised Swimmer of the Year,
Open Water Swimmer of the Year, Disabled Swimmer of the Year, Best Performance
of the Year, Journalist (Print, Radio and TV) of the Year, and Life Time
Achievement Awards.
