The Springbok
Women’s Sevens team has made it to the first ever IRB Women’s Sevens World
Championships to be held in Dubai next March,
after being crowned Champions of the Confederation of African Rugby tournament
in Uganda
on Sunday.
In a contest geared
towards determining the qualifying countries for the Dubai
tournament, South Africa
displayed their superiority on the field of play when they swept past their
opponents with high margins on the scoreboard.
South Africa coach Denver Wannies said his team was "very excited"
about their performance in Uganda.
"Our plans are coming together and we continue to meet our targets. It was
great motivation knowing that we were playing for a place in the World
Championships."
Wannies added that they
were not resting on their laurels. "We have clearly defined targets and can’t
afford to lose focus. In the next week or so, we will be working on plans for
the next phase."
They won by beating Uganda 24-0 in
the final. They opened the tournament on Saturday with a 43-0 drubbing of Uganda A. After
that it was 31-0 against Zambia,
and 36-5 against the Kenyans.
In the semi-finals, they
again met Kenya,
emerging triumphant with a 26-5 win. South Africa
is joined by fellow finalists Uganda
as representatives for Africa in Dubai.
The other countries in
the tournament were Botswana,
Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Tunisia,
and Zimbabwe.
Wannies will now be
watching the Women’s Sevens Inter-Provincial tournament in Cape
Town in October to see if there is additional talent as he prepares
for Dubai.
