Swimming South Africa (SSA) in partnership with the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), on Thursday (December 20) officially launched a collaborative endeavour to bring water safety to the Durban and Port Elizabeth communities, as the 2012 holiday swimming season starts.
The Ocean Splash Water Safety Awareness Campaign – being held at Durban’s South Beach and PE’s Wells Estate Beach until January 1, 2013 – aims at teaching people how to be water safe during the holiday season through various ocean splash activities.
The two-week programme features water safety education by the SSA trained instructors, water safety posters promoting swimming and water safety as well as various fun activities for the whole family.
“Swimming South Africa’s mission is to ensure that every South African becomes water safe and to contribute to a healthier, well-educated and skilled population and, with the assistance of Transnet, we are one step closer to achieving that goal” said Swimming SA’s President Mr Jace Naidoo.
“This campaign will provide Durban and PE communities with the necessary tools and Water Safety knowledge around beach and swimming areas during the 2012/2013 summer holiday season,” he said.
“It is tragic that drownings, which are preventable, are said to be one of the top causes of unnatural death among South African children,” said Tau Morwe Chief Executive, Transnet National Ports Authority.
“As our business is intricately connected to water we believe that teaming up with Swimming SA to spread water safety awareness which, can be taken home beyond the beach and the sea, is an appropriate campaign for us.
“The role of education in making people aware of the risks of being close to water and how to be safe in aquatic environments, be it the sea or a river or a swimming pool, cannot be underestimated. The programme is intended to be fun and hopefully holidaymakers will take it home and spread the information among their friends, family and colleagues,” he said.
