The Proteas got off to an encouraging start in India after securing an 83-run victory in a warm-up match against the India President XI team on Sunday, 23 September 2019.
The South Africans are currently preparing for their tour that will see them begin with a T20I match on Tuesday. Looking back at the warm-up match, stand-in captain Suné Luus felt that the team played a superb match on the day.
“Ja, I don’t think we could have started better in India. I think we started extremely well with Lizelle (Lee) and Tasmin (Brits) up front. And, then obviously with Ayabonga (Khaka) coming back, we are extremely happy to have her back,” she said.
“I think our fielding, and everything was superb today. I think we’ve set the standard very high for the rest of the series. We’ve got one more practice day tomorrow (Monday) and then we go into the series. We’re super excited and we’re happy with the progression that we got today,” she added.
Head coach Hilton Moreeng also shared his views after the match, saying that this was the kind of preparation that he wanted to see from his side.
“I think today (Sunday) for us is just the kind of preparation you would’ve wanted. It was more important for us to get better on the middle of the bat. We know that India is going to be a very good team, very challenging opposition on their home ground,” he said.
On the return of Khaka and Anneke Bosch to the T20 stage, coach Moreeng said, “It is very good. I think for Aya to come and get into a very competitive game like this I think that the Bangladesh series also helped that she played, and I think that that confidence is just (something) that she took from there and brought here.
“You could see a seasoned campaigner the way she went about. She knew exactly what she wanted to do,” he ended.
The Proteas will take on India Board President XI on Tuesday, 24 September in the first of five T20 Internationals.
