Who Will Be Crowned Team of the Year at the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards?

Momentum Proteas, Banyana Banyana and Golf RSA will battle it out for Team of the Year accolade at the 2022 Momentum Awards.

As a country, we rally behind them in numbers; their results and hard work bring the patriots in us together. We fly our flags high and release our loudest cheers in their names. These are South African teams of women that make history, break records and make us proud. This is what the Momentum gsport Team of the Year Award is all about. This category magnifies a team of South African sportswomen of any age, who have and continue to excel as a unit.

In March 2022, the Momentum Proteas reached the Cricket World Cup semi-final, their most successful World Cup ever with a total of five wins. The team also registered their first victories over New Zealand and England at the ODI World Cup.

“The team is extremely grateful for this recognition for the Momentum gsport Awards. On behalf of the team, I would like to thank everyone for their continuous support for the Momentum Proteas,” said Lita Gqirana, Momentum Proteas media manager.

He added that the team’ highlight was their semi-final birth at the ICC World Cup, despite the losing to England: “They had a tremendous show, winning five games in the group stages, the most that they ever won at a World Cup. Only losing to England and Australia, the teams that were in the finals before Australia won the World Cup.”

Speaking on the value of the awards platform, Gqirana said: “The Momentum gsport Awards is a fantastic initiative/media platform where hard working and intelligent individuals are being honoured for their service for advancing women’s sport. It has a huge impact on cultivating women’s sport not only on the field but off the field as well in various roles and promoting those various roles that exist around the sporting world.”

Banyana Banyana made history winning the 2022 Total Energies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title. The South Africans were unbeaten in the tournament and earned qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“I think it’s such a great achievement for Banyana Banyana to be a finalist for the Momentum gsport Awards. Coming off our historical win – WAFCON – being crowned African Champs for the first time and elevating the support of Banyana Banyana,” said Lauren Duncan Banyana Banyana team manager.

“We are grateful that we were nominated and even want to finish on top, we also would like to congratulate the other teams that are nominated within the same award category together with us, at the end of the day we are finalist and we are all winners and champions, but I think the biggest thing for us is that women’s sport is on the rise in the country. I think that’s a win for everybody involved with the sport fraternity,” she continued.

“The Momentum gsport Awards is an annual event where we celebrate top achievers within women’s sport and I think it’s such a great event where we all come together, not only highlighting this event but the work gsport does throughout the year elevating and putting women in sport on the map. We just like to thank gsport for the work that they do not just for this one event of the year,  but throughout the year putting women sport on the map in South Africa.”

Rounding up the category, Golf RSA won the 2022 All Africa junior girls title, thus earning a spot to represent the country at the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup. From the junior ranks, all the way to seniors, Golf RSA is the perfect home of growing competitive golfers that compete at the highest level.

“We are thrilled that golf once again made the shortlist in three categories,” said GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn.

“For more than a decade, the Momentum gsport Awards has done phenomenal work in shining a spotlight on our female athletes as well as the administrators, volunteers, media and others who work tirelessly to promote women’s sport.

“We have been blessed with multiple finalists in the awards since 2018, the year GolfRSA was named Federation of the Year, and being a finalist in Team of the Year category against two top performing international teams is a nod to the surging talent in the game. It also acknowledges every golf club and golf union, every coach and academy, all the golf institutions, sponsors and our golf administrators and volunteers who collaborate with GolfRSA to identify upcoming talent and help us to nurture champions for the future.”

In 2021, SA Water Polo won the Team of the Year crown.
