It is 1 April, and as we step into the second quarter of the year, I am struck by the incredible momentum in our space. From the grit of the Absa Cape Epic to the clinical performances on the cricket pitch, South African women are making headlines. But here is a truth I’ve learned over 20 years in this industry: performing on the field is only half the battle.
To turn your athletic success into a sustainable career, you must be the CEO of your own brand. You have to own your narrative. Here is your roadmap to closing the visibility gap in the months ahead.
1. Your Phone is Your Broadcasting Booth
In 2026, you don’t need a fancy camera crew to tell your story. You have a global microphone in your pocket.
The Power of the ‘Raw’ Moment
Don’t wait for a professional photoshoot. If you’ve just won Player of the Match or hit a personal best, snap a photo on your mobile phone right there on the field!
Authenticity Wins
Fans and sponsors today value the ‘sweat and tears’ over polished perfection. That grainy, post-match selfie captures the real emotion of the win and that is what resonates.

2. Get on the gsport Radar
My team and I are always hunting for the next big story, but you have to help us find you. We want to celebrate the sisterhood, but we need you to meet us halfway.
Tag @gsport4girls
When you post a milestone or a behind-the-scenes look at your training, tag us directly on Instagram, X, or TikTok.
The Digital Keys:
Use our community hashtags: #GoGirls, #gsportAfrica, and #gsportGlobal. These are the digital breadcrumbs that lead our newsroom straight to your success. Whether you are competing in Jo’burg or Nairobi, these tags connect you to a global movement.

3. Build a Brand with a ‘Why’
Modern brands aren’t just looking for stats; they are looking for values.
Find Your Purpose
Are you playing for the little girl in the stands who needs a hero? Are you advocating for mental health or grassroots development?
Engagement is Currency
It’s not about how many followers you have; it’s about how much they care. Talk to your community. When you engage, you turn “followers” into a “fanbase,” and that is what drives professionalisation.

4. The Road to the 2026 gsport Awards
Everything you do in Q2 builds the foundation for the 2026 gsport Awards. This is our 21st year of celebrating the best in the business, and I want to see you on that stage.
The Critical Date
Mark your calendars and set your alarms. Nominations for the 2026 gsport Awards close on 31 May.
Document the Journey
Keep a folder on your phone of every media clip, every podium finish, and every Player of the Match’ mobile snap. This is your evidence. Use it to nominate yourself or a peer who is breaking barriers.
My challenge to you for Q2: Be bolder than you are, and braver than you were. Don’t be South Africa’s best-kept secret. We are ready to tell the world about your success. Make sure we can find you before the May deadline.
Let’s keep advancing women’s sport together. #CloseTheVisibilityGap
