The women’s Western Province A Waterpolo team have claimed aquatic superiority in Durban on Sunday, after winning the women’s finals at the SA National Water Polo Championships.
The Cape Town-based girls had to overcome favourites KwaZulu Natal A, who had beaten the travellers 11-3 in the tournament’s opening stages.
The local girls lead the final 5-3 just after half-time, when WP went on the offensive, scoring three goals to go 6-5 ahead, from where they never gave up the lead to claim a narrow 8-7 victory.
Star performers for WP included Lisa Stirret (3 goals), captain Natasha Day (2) and Ondine Julyan (2), while KZN were kept in the chase by Tammy Heydenrych, Leanne Keet and Lee Murphy, who each scored two goals.
Hungarian coach Zsolt Desi will have double the cause for celebrations, because as coach he has taken both the men’s and women’s teams to the winner’s podium in the same year, considered to be a first.
