University of Fort Hare Honours student Yanelisa Phakathi is making strides in her sporting career as she has been appointed as a Hollywoodbets Super League referee.
The 24-year-old who hails from Bizana is currently completing her honours degree in Human Movement Studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The South African Football Association referee says she looks up to 2022 Momentum gsport Awards double finalist, Akhona Makalima, who has risen to great heights as a FIFA-accredited referee.
“She is a continental referee and she is also from here in the Eastern Cape. I want to be the next Akhona Makhalima.”
Speaking on the challenges she has faced while refereeing, Phakathi says: “Refereeing is very challenging and that’s what I like about it! I want to show other women that even us females are strong and capable because most people usually ask me if you are not afraid of people shouting at you and I tell them that I’m a strong woman, I can bear any obstacle coming my way.”
Her message for other young girls who are passionate about refereeing: “That it is possible! We as women are the strongest people and we can do many things, just that we were limited but now I want them to come out and show the world what a woman can actually do,” she concluded.
