South African youngster Nthabiseng Majiya thanked the Banyana Banyana coaching staff as she made her #TotalEnergiesWAFCON2022 debut in the team’s 3-1 winner over Burundi on Thursday, 7 July.
As Banyana Banyana established a 3-1 lead in the 52nd minute, Head Coach Desiree Ellis opted to bring on the fresh young legs of Majiya, who replaced the experienced Jermaine Seoposenwe.
The 18-year-old is the youngest player for Team South Africa and will forever remember this historic moment in her rising career.
Speaking to CAF Online after the match, Majiya said: “This means so much to me. I have been waiting for this moment all my life. When the coach called upon me to come onto the pitch, I was nervous but I got a lot of encouragement from my teammates.”
Ellis was full of praises for the teenager and revealed: “We selected her for this tournament because she is versatile. She can play upfront and on both wings. That gives us so many options and that is what you want when going into a tournament like this one.”
In the final Group C match, South Africa will take on Botswana on Sunday.
Nigeria Bounce Back to Victory
Defending champions Nigeria earned their first points in Group C with a 2-0 win over Botswana.
The Super Falcons lost their opening match against South Africa on Monday and managed to right their wrongs thanks to goals by Ifeoma Onumonu and Christy Ucheibe.
The ladies in green moved to second place in Group C and will be boosted with confidence ahead of their final group match against Burundi on Sunday.
