Zambia has achieved a major upset in the world of football by defeating Germany 3-2 in an international friendly match, serving as a thrilling prelude to the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Copper Queens of Zambia, considered the lowest-ranked team participating in the tournament, outshone the German squad, which holds an impressive second place in the global rankings.
At halftime, the score stood at a deadlock of 0-0, leaving both teams eager to break the impasse. In the 50th minute, Zambian captain Barbra Banda astounded spectators with a sensational goal, capitalizing on an assist by Rachel Kundananji to open the scoring for Zambia.
Just four minutes later, Kundananji herself showcased her prowess by doubling Zambia’s lead, leaving the German team in a state of disbelief. Despite Germany’s late efforts, Zambia maintained their advantage until the 90th minute, when Alexandra Popp managed to pull one goal back for her side. The score now stood at 2-1 in favour of Zambia.
Popp, displaying her tenacity, scored once more, levelling the game at 2-all. With the outcome hanging in the balance, Zambian captain Barbra Banda emerged as the hero, propelling Zambia back into the lead with a powerful strike.
The match ultimately concluded with a 3-2 victory for Zambia, prompting well-deserved celebrations among the Copper Queens, who basked in their remarkable achievement.
Following the game, Captain Barbara Banda expressed her jubilation on Twitter, stating, “A great way to end our European camp with a win. Great performance from the team, everyone gave their best for the win. One team, one dream. Next up, the @FIFAWWC.”
