The Comrades Marathon Association has revealed an increase in this year’s prize purse to a substantial amount of R4.31million, which is a 90 percent increase on last year’s R2.27million, on Saturday, 29 April 2023.
The announcement was made in line with the Association’s commitment and promise to the runners and media to restore the prize money back to the levels before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new figures represent nearly double last year’s 1st prize from R260 000 to R500.000, with the 2nd place moving from R130 000 to R250 000 with the final podium place increasing from R90 000 to R180 000.
In addition to that, if the winner of this year’s Marathon breaks the Down Run Best Times of David Gatebe (2016- 5:18:19) or Frith van der Merwe (1989- 5:54:43) respectively, they can take home a minimum of R1million in Comrades prize money, which consists of R500 000 plus another R500 000 as an incentive for breaking the best time.
Lastly, the first South African and first Kwa-Zulu Natal athlete will each receive R200 000 and R 60 000, respectively.
The 96th running of the world’s biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon will take place on Sunday, 11 June 2023.
The race is set to start in Pietermaritzburg and finish 12 hours later in Durban.
