South African B-Girl, Courtnae’ Paul has again displayed excellence in breakdancing after she was crowned the 1vs1 B-Girl AfroBreak International Champion after emerging the best of nineteen competitors in Accra, Ghana, on Sunday, 27 October 2024.

In the final, Paul was up against local favourite Tris Naomi, and she knew the match-up would be tough but never took her eye off the prize, bringing the moves that eventually got her the title.

“This win feels incredible, not just because of the outcome, but because of the journey. Facing unexpected setbacks on performance night forced me to dig deep and discover a new level of confidence in myself.”

“When it’s just you on that stage, you are all you have, and your options are to either give up or back yourself 100%,” said Paul.

“Overcoming adversity made this moment truly special.”

“Honestly, competing abroad solo is a wild ride. The energy is completely different, and when the crowd gets behind the home team, the whole atmosphere shifts. I was a bit unsure what to expect from Tris – she’s super young, talented, and has a great team behind her so I knew she’d bring some heat, but my intention was clear – bring home the title.”

Breaking has seen more growth in 2024 as it debuted at the Paris Olympics and Paul says it’s important to build on all the positive traction the sport has gained.

“The Olympics helped put Breaking on the map, but let’s not forget the years of hard work from our global community that got us there. Our Olympic debut was rocky, with lots of negative press, but I believe our community’s efforts will turn that momentum into something positive”

“Now, with Breaking in the spotlight, we’re seeing a surge in interest, competitions, funding, and mentorship programs specifically for B-Girls. I hope that this momentum keeps going, cementing Breaking’s place in the global conversation.”

Paul says it’s been a defining year on a personal level, having added ‘Television Presenter’ to her CV as part of the gsport Digital Squad at the 2024 gsport Awards in September.

“This year has been a whirlwind of non-stop action, with performances that have pushed me to new heights in both competition and my career. It’s surreal, like one big blur, but I’ve made a conscious effort to stay present and appreciate every moment.”

With all that Paul has achieved in 2024, what can we expect from the talented B-Girl in 2025?

“I’m exactly where I’ve always wanted to be – living my dream, no matter how challenging it gets. That realisation keeps me grounded and grateful.”

“Life is short so I’m going all-in on 2025. More tours, competitions, and TV shows are already on the cards. I’m determined to make the most of it, break some barriers, and see what else is possible!”
