Barcelona midfielder, Alexia Putellas, has entered into football’s history books as she became the first women’s player to win back-to-back Ballon d’Or Feminin awards since it launched in 2018.
On Monday, 17 October 2022, Putellas was crowned the best women’s player in the world ahead of Arsenal’s Beth Mead and Chelsea’s Sam Kerr.
Speaking after receiving the accolade, Putellas said: “Without my teammates this would not have been possible.
“I’m very happy to be back here and pleased because a year ago I was able to win this prize and it pushed me to want to be even better.”
The 28-year-old captained Barcelona to a third successive Primera Division title, after the team made history winning all 30 of their league games during the 2021-22 campaign.
The team also went on to complete a domestic treble, adding the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa de la Reina to their trophy cabinet.
In addition to the team accolades, individually, Putellas scored 11 goals in the Champions League (more than any other player in the tournament) and went on to win the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award.
She also scored 18 goals in the league, four in the Copa de la Reina and one in the Super Cup.
