The Seychelles Yachting Association recently held its annual Sailing Festival under the theme Women on Water – Fun in Sailing, to encourage women and girls in the country to take part in the water sport.
Forming part of the World Sailing’s strategy to increase women representation, Lucy Athanasius, the Vice-Chairperson of the SYA says: “We have a lot of men and young boys in sailing, which is why we want to bring in more women to sailing.”
She added: “We want women to experience sailing and learn the fundamentals of the sport, in the hopes that they can eventually register with the association and hopefully create future women champions in the future.”
In Africa, there has been a notable growth of women taking up sailing as visibility on the sport has increased and has welcomed women and girls to participate.
