After 20 unstoppable years, 36-year-old Allyson Felix calls time on her athletics career.
The American won her 30th major international medal at the World Athletics Championships on Friday, 15 July 2022, running in the 4x400m mixed relay as Team USA claimed bronze.
Felix will leave the sport next month with a total of 19 World Championship medals, in addition to 7 golds, 3 silvers and 1 bronze that she won in five Olympic appearances.
The US Team consisted of Allyson Felix, Elija Godwin, Vernon Norwood and Kennedy Simon.
Speaking after the race, Felix said: “To be able to come here in front of a home crowd, it’s something I’ve always wanted.
“To be able to have that, obviously not in the prime of my career, to finish here tonight, to have (daughter) Cammy on the stands, to share that moment meant a lot,” she added.
“I felt a lot of love out there and it was cool. I wasn’t sure what to expect, you know, running at home, but it met every expectation. And it’s a night that I’ll really cherish. No, it definitely felt different. I think it’s the first time I heard the crowd while I was running and I didn’t expect that. It was really cool and I just felt a lot of love from a lot of people. It was an emotional day.”
