Anke Erlank-Moore has won the women’s Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour in Cape Town this morning, after keeping in the leading peloton for the duration of the 109km world-famous race.
Spurred on by her sponsor Duravit’s promise of two new bathrooms should she win, Moore acknowledged that a tough training regime of mountain bike stage racing had put her in winning form.
Moore approached the final 2km unflustered after a smooth cycle, keeping her strength for the last to outpace second-placed Cherise Taylor to the finish line, with Marissa van der Merwe placing third.
Defending champion Anriette Schoeman was ruled out of contention for the title, when she sustained a broken wrist after she was knocked off her bike while training for the Cycle Tour in St Albans two weeks ago.
Moore’s victory brings her a fourth title in the Cycle Tour, and together with Schoeman, no other woman has topped the winner’s podium in the past eight years.
Asked about future competitors most likely to assume this distinguished title, Moore pointed to junior cyclist Cherise Taylor as a woman destined for Cycle Tour fame.
