Anriette Schoeman (Proline Computers) made cycling history this weekend when she took her 6th consecutive title in the Pick n Pay Fast One Classic, which drew more than 6500 cyclists to the 2008 event.
The Fast One proved very important for all the teams, as every new team and newly-signed rider was out to claim the Pick n Pay Fast One title to impress the fans and sponsors.
The race started with one of the fastest paces ever, when Team MTN’s Altie Clark immediately set a furious pace leaving more than half of the ladies bunch behind in the first 2km.
From this point in the race it was a free for all with teams attacking left right and centre. It was clear that the registered teams was out to prove their strength and power to each other.
Team Proline Computers, MTN, SIBIST, Cycle Lab Toyota continuously launched attacks followed by other teams immediately counter attacking. This tactics and high speed racing made it impossible for individual riders to get away.
Cycle Lab Toyota and Proline Computers drew first blood when Lynette Burger took first place in the Queen of the Mountain prime 49km into the race, followed by Proline Computers Anriette Schoeman in second position, and Robyn de Groot following in third.
With 10km to go, the scene was set for a huge bunch sprint to the finish, and when it was down to 700m to go, Altie Clark (MTN) launched her lead-out sprint to the finish, followed by a bunch of 20-plus riders.
Proline’s Robyn de Groot immediately reacted and set chase followed by her team captain, Anriette Schoeman, who was closely watched by Cherise Taylor on her right-hand side and Lynette Burger to the left.
Schoeman made her move with 200m to go, and the "Pocket Rocket" of Port Elizabeth managed to open a gap on her rivals to finished first, with Burger in second place, Taylor third and De Groot finishing fourth.
