Team South Africa’s Asemahle Sotwili and Okuhle Mthi pulled off impressive stoppage wins at the Region 5 Games in Lilongwe, Malawi on Tuesday, 6 December 2022.
In the first fight in the girl’s division, Sotwili faced Mozambique’s Setlabane Gorota. The 17-year-old South African was all over her opponent from the first bell, with a series of punches to ensure that she eventually walked away with a win in the bag.
While, in the other encounter, Mthi had a cagey first round but eventually found her rhythm from the second stanza against her opponent, Zimbabwe’s Glorious Moyo.
“In South Africa the women will be proud of us,” said Okuhle to teamsa.co.za after the fight.
“I made it hard for myself in the first round. I changed the game plan in the second round. I appreciate my coaches. You need to listen to your coaches. I wasn’t throwing straight punches, I was throwing hooks. The coaches said that I must change the way I am boxing, and punch straighter. I did that and the fight changed around.”
