Talented 17-year-old Ashleigh Simon is coming to the party in the world’s shopping mecca, steadily increasing her advantage on the vividly lush green lawns contrasted against the desert-scape background of the Emirates Golf Club, her three rounds improving 74-71-69 for a share of 15th place on 215.
Fellow South African and professional golfer Laurette Maritz started strong on day one, but faltered in her second two rounds to stand 69-74-73 for 216 overnight, to share 20th place with Swedes Lotta Wahlin and Louise Friberg, French Gwladys Nocera and Australian Karen Lunn.
The Sunday Independent’s Grant Winter reports today that Simon, playing as an amateur, has achieved her first cut in an overseas professional event at this inaugural Dubai Ladies Masters, and quotes a confident Simon pointing out that she’s just two shots off the top ten.
Simon is the sole remaining amateur in the tournament, and she tees off alongside Belgian Lara Tadiotto today for her final round at the Emirates Golf Club, surely knowing that her amateur days will draw to a close holding promise that few of her competitors can claim.
