Australia Thump SA by 8 Wickets in Opening ODI

Marizanne Kapp (pictured at Hobert in Tasmania) was the mainstay of the South African innings, smashing 8 boundaries for a quick-fire half-century before retiring hurt after being hit on the elbow, and taking no further part in the opening ODI, at the Adelaide Oval, South Australia in Australia, on Saturday, 3 February, 2024. A dominant bowling display from the Australians saw them thump South Africa by eight wickets in the first ODI at the Adelaide Oval, in North Adelaide, South Australia, on Saturday, 3 February, 2024.

Australia won the toss in what was a stunning summer’s afternoon in Adelaide and chose to have a bowl first.

The Proteas were looking to get off to a good start, but captain Laura Wolvaardt was sent back to the changeroom for just four runs in the third over, caught Georgia Wareham off the bowling of Megan Schutt, who sent down a sensational spell in her 200th match for Australia.

Anneke Bosch joined Tazmin Brits, but she too was sent back to the dressing room for a duck off the bowling of Kim Garth.

Tazmin Britz joined her shortly after with just 1-run to her name. Marizanne Kapp came to the crease with the score on 9/3 in the eight over. She along with Suné Luus steadied the innings before Luus was cleaned bowled by Annabel Sutherland, for just 6 runs. That left the visitors in a shambles, as they were 56/5 in the thirteenth over.

Kapp put her bat to ground and got work with Chloe Tryon by her side. Tryon managed 10 runs before Ash Gardner sent her back to the dugout. Next up, Nadine de Klerk joined Kapp at the crease. Kapp played a well-batted 50, hitting eight fours before she was struck just below her left elbow and retired hurt, and that was the start of the end for the Proteas.

The Proteas lost 4 wickets in quick succession, leaving them on total of 105/9 in just 31.3 overs. Alana King was the most destructive bowler with 3/19, along with Kim Garth on 2/18, but it was Megan Schutt’s bowling figures of 1-1 in her five overs that really put the spanner in the works for the visitors, from the start of their innings.

Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield knew their game plan and executed the run chase perfectly before Litchfield with 12-runs to her name, knicked one back to Jafta off the bowling of Masabata Klaas and had to return to the dugout. Healy fell just 7 balls later, leaving the hosts on 44/2 after nine overs.

With 62 runs to get, it became the Beth Mooney, show as she chipped away at the target, going after the bowlers at her peril and hitting nine fours in her stance at the crease. She achieved 52* by hitting the winning runs in the nineteenth over, and boosted her team to an 8 wicket-victory.

Australia lead the series 1-0 in the three match series, with the next match on Wednesday 7 February, at the North Sydney Oval in Sydney.
