For the second year running, North West’s Baillie Park Primary, was the toast of the Shoprite Checkers, USSASA National Under-13 Netball Challenge, which was played in Boksburg this past weekend.
Baillie Park Primary beat Kragbron from Mphumalanga 18-14 to win the Merit Final.
In the Development Final, Lulekani Primary from Limpopo beat Rebonwe School from Gauteng 8-8.
The National Under-13 Netball Challenge took place between 18 merit and development netball teams at EG Jansen High School in Boksburg, where hundreds of players, parents and supporters met to witness the deciding matches for the championship.
For the eighth consecutive year, Shoprite has sponsored R1-million to promote the development of the game among the millions of young girls attending the country’s 20 000 primary schools.
This major development initiative of women’s sport has involved netball matches at regional, provincial and national level countrywide – including some of the most remote rural areas – for the past eight years.
The netball challenge is designed to enable talented players to go on to play the game at high school, provincial and national level, while allowing communities to become involved in the process.
SABC’s junior sports developmental programme, Sportsbuzz, features inserts on the championships every Fridays at 14h00 on SportsBuzz (SABC 1).
