Banyana Banyana’s preparations ahead of the Africa Women Cup of Nations tournament began with a 5-1 defeat to Netherlands in an international friendly on Tuesday, 12 April 2022.

The Desiree Ellis-led team were without AC Milan midfielder and captain, Refiloe Jane due to injury, while Thembi Kgatlana, who plays for Atletico Madrid, wore the armband for the friendly encounter.

From the early stages, the hosts were on the front foot with Jackie Groenen’s putting the Orange into the lead in the 12th minute with a stunning strike from the edge of the box that went in off the crossbar.

Kgatlana went on to level matters in the 25th minute with a left-footed strike across goal into the bottom corner after a through ball by Karabo Dhlamini from a counter-attack.

5 minutes later, Lineth Beerensteyn restored the lead with a clinical flicked volley after a cross at the near post. By half-time, Netherlands led 3-1.

In the second half, Ellis’ side showed intention to get goals on the scoreboard bringing on fresh legs in midfield after the hour-mark, as Noxolo Cesane and Nomvula Kgoale both replaced Gabriela Salgado and Thalea Smidt.

In the last 13 minutes, Damaris Egurrola put the game to bed for the Oranje after making it 4-1 with a close-range finish after a cross at the near post.

Egurrola grabbed her brace in stoppage time as the Dutch extended their run against Banyana Banyana to three matches.
