Banyana Banyana’s primary objective heading into this year’s African Women’s Cup of Nations would be to finally get their hands on the prestigious continental title as they have been drawn against rivals Nigeria in Group C.
The draw of the women’s premier continental tournament was conducted on Friday night (30 April 2022), for the showpiece which runs from 2-22 July in Morocco.
Ellis’ charges came close to winning the title in 2018 but lost to Super Falcons on penalties.
South Africa however, qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and would be looking to repeat the same achievement in Morocco.
Nigeria will play South Africa in their opening match on 4 July, Banyana will then host Burundi on 7 July, before concluding their Group C matches against Botswana on 10 July.
Speaking to SAFA Media, Ellis said: “While the draw was happening, I had this funny feeling that we were going to end up in the same group as Nigeria.
“Burundi are debutants and we’ve never played them before, they are not there by chance and we don’t know a lot about them but we’ve watched some of their games during the qualifying campaign and we’ll get as much information as we can to make sure that we plan and prepare well,” she added.
“Botswana are neighbours from COSAFA, who are also debutants. We’ve played them many times before, we’ve never lost to them in 90 minutes in our last 10 meetings, but our games have always been tight.
“Our job is to make sure that we win our first game to make sure that we set the tone for the rest,” Ellis concluded.
